What the study showed, in plain terms

This publication examines osteocalcin and other bone-turnover markers, glucose and insulin, homa-ir, adiponectin. Study population or evidence base: 78 participants completed the three-arm intervention. Intervention or exposure: 1,000 IU/day vitamin D3 plus 360 mg/day magnesium as glycinate; D3 alone; or placebo.

Key findings

The combination raised vitamin D status but did not significantly improve bone-turnover markers, insulin resistance or glycemic measures compared with the other groups.

What this study can and cannot tell us

These are secondary biomarker outcomes from the same NCT03134417 intervention reported by Cheung and colleagues. They do not represent an independent trial or long-term fracture or diabetes outcomes.
