Study snapshot

DesignThree-arm randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
ModelWomen aged 40–65 years with visible signs of skin ageing
Sample90 randomized; 87 completed (30 collagen + vitamin C, 28 collagen + vitamin C + hyaluronic acid, 29 placebo)
InterventionDaily for 16 weeks: 5 g hydrolysed collagen + 80 mg vitamin C; or the same formula + 30 mg hyaluronic acid; or placebo.
Duration16 weeks
EndpointsDermis density; Dermis thickness; Skin texture and roughness; Wrinkle severity and volume; Skin elasticity; Skin hydration

What the study showed, in plain terms

This 16-week trial compared hydrolysed collagen plus vitamin C against the same formula with added hyaluronic acid and against placebo. Both active products improved some dermal-density, texture and wrinkle measures, but neither improved hydration or elasticity versus placebo, and adding 30 mg hyaluronic acid did not produce superior results.

Key findings

Both collagen-containing formulas improved dermis density and several texture/wrinkle measures versus placebo. Neither active arm significantly improved skin hydration or elasticity. The 30 mg hyaluronic-acid addition did not outperform collagen plus vitamin C alone on the assessed outcomes.

What this study can and cannot tell us

The collagen arm also contained 80 mg vitamin C, so the study does not isolate collagen alone. The added-HA arm used only one HA dose (30 mg). Tosla d.o.o. co-funded the study and manufactured the study products. The sample consisted of women aged 40–65 years and follow-up lasted 16 weeks.
