Study snapshot

DesignHuman pharmacokinetic pilot study with paired treatment conditions
ModelAdults receiving a glucoraphanin-rich broccoli seed and sprout extract with active myrosinase
Sample16
InterventionBroccoli seed and sprout extract containing glucoraphanin and active myrosinase, tested in coated and uncoated forms and before/after omeprazole administration
DurationAcute pharmacokinetic dosing across paired treatment conditions
EndpointsSulforaphane metabolite excretion; Glucoraphanin-to-sulforaphane conversion; Effect of gastric acidity; Effect of enteric coating; Peripheral blood gene expression

What the study showed, in plain terms

Even when active myrosinase is included, the stomach can still influence how much sulforaphane is generated. This pilot found greater conversion after gastric acid suppression and with enteric coating, showing that enzyme protection and delivery location can matter alongside the ingredient list.

Key findings

Sulforaphane metabolite excretion increased after omeprazole for uncoated tablets, and enteric coating improved glucoraphanin-to-sulforaphane conversion before PPI treatment. The data support gastric acidity as one determinant of myrosinase-dependent delivery.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Small pilot study focused on pharmacokinetics and exploratory gene-expression endpoints. It does not establish superior clinical outcomes for a specific commercial sulforaphane supplement.
