Study snapshot

DesignSingle-blind four-arm parallel dose-ranging human trial
ModelHealthy adults without kidney disease or known kidney stones
Sample40 recruited; 37 completed
Intervention0, 500, 1000 or 2000 mg/day isolated l-hydroxyproline
Duration12 weeks plus 4-week washout
EndpointsUrinary oxalate; Urinalysis; Safety labs

What the study showed, in plain terms

Two grams daily of free hydroxyproline raised urinary oxalate in this small study; 500 and 1000 mg/day groups did not differ from control and values reverted after withdrawal.

Key findings

Oxalate rose at weeks 8 and 12 in 2-g/day group but not lower-dose groups; no clinical stone outcome.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Free hydroxyproline is not equivalent to peptide-bound hydroxyproline in collagen powder; small study of healthy people with no stone-former cohort; manufacturer-funded.
