Study snapshot

DesignRandomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled two-period crossover trial
ModelAdults with fibromyalgia
Sample110 enrolled; 89 completed; 96.6% women
InterventionCombination supplement containing CoQ10, tryptophan and magnesium
DurationTwo 3-month treatment periods separated by a 1-month washout
EndpointsICAF fatigue item; Pain intensity; Sleep quality; Functional impact; ICAF total score; Adverse events

What the study showed, in plain terms

The combination did not beat placebo on the prespecified fatigue endpoint. Some secondary pain, sleep-quality, functional-impact and total-score outcomes improved, but the study cannot determine whether CoQ10 caused those changes because magnesium and tryptophan were given at the same time.

Key findings

Fatigue improved significantly in placebo and only nonsignificantly in the active combination. Some secondary outcomes favored the combination. Adverse events were mild and similarly distributed.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Combination intervention, primary fatigue endpoint negative, single center, predominantly women and crossover design limit CoQ10-specific conclusions.
