What the study showed, in plain terms

Published in 2015, this source examined safety, interactions and special populations. Design: Human crossover pharmacokinetic interaction study. Sample/model: 10 healthy volunteers; 3 also received intravenous midazolam. The exposure or intervention was Quercetin 1,500 mg once and then daily for one week; oral midazolam 7.5 mg. Follow-up or treatment period: Single dose and 1 week.

A single dose did not alter midazolam pharmacokinetics. Repeated quercetin showed a nonsignificant trend toward lower oral midazolam exposure; intravenous results differed.

Very small study with route-dependent findings; the oral exposure ratio confidence interval crossed no effect. It does not support a universal CYP3A inhibition claim.

Key findings

  • A single dose did not alter midazolam pharmacokinetics.
  • Repeated quercetin showed a nonsignificant trend toward lower oral midazolam exposure; intravenous results differed.
  • The recorded outcome domains were Exposure and pharmacokinetics.
  • The result applies to the tested exposure: Quercetin 1,500 mg once and then daily for one week; oral midazolam 7.5 mg; Single dose and 1 week.

What this study can and cannot tell us

  • Very small study with route-dependent findings; the oral exposure ratio confidence interval crossed no effect. It does not support a universal CYP3A inhibition claim.
  • A change in blood exposure or a metabolic marker is not a demonstrated improvement in symptoms, disease events or lifespan. The tested formulation and co-administered medicines matter.
  • Source basis: Source check: PubMed abstract and indexed metadata; full methods were not independently confirmed for this entry. Missing method details, funding information or participant denominators are not inferred.
