What the study showed, in plain terms

This systematic review pulled together rodent studies of isolated apigenin and cognition or behavior. Across the included animal models, apigenin was commonly associated with better learning and memory, reduced anxiety- or depression-like behavior and improved motor outcomes. The authors explicitly call for clinical experiments before therapeutic conclusions are made.

Key findings

The review reports favorable effects across learning, memory, locomotion, anxiety-like behavior, depressive-like behavior and motor coordination in impaired rodents. Proposed mechanisms include ERK/CREB/BDNF signaling, neurotransmitter modulation, lower inflammatory signaling and reduced oxidative neuronal damage.

What this study can and cannot tell us

All included efficacy studies were preclinical. Doses, disease models, behavioral tests and intervention durations varied, and animal behavioral improvements cannot establish cognitive or psychiatric benefit in humans. Effective and safe human dosing remains unknown.
