Study snapshot

DesignSystematic review of randomized controlled trials
ModelHuman periodontitis trials
Sample17 RCTs represented across 18 publications; 12 local and 5 systemic CoQ10 protocols
InterventionLocal or systemic CoQ10 used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing

EndpointsProbing pocket depth; Bleeding on probing; Clinical attachment loss; Gingival index; Plaque index

What the study showed, in plain terms

This review found many small randomized trials of CoQ10 added to non-surgical periodontal treatment, but protocols, doses and study quality varied greatly. The authors concluded that the evidence is too uncertain to recommend CoQ10 as an effective periodontal adjunct.

Key findings

About half of studies reported favorable probing-depth differences, while other trials were null or contradictory. The review rejected a firm effectiveness conclusion because of high risk of bias, missing dose information and major heterogeneity.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Small sample sizes, short follow-up, low reporting quality, heterogeneous local and systemic protocols, unclear doses and high or unclear risk of bias.
