Study snapshot

DesignDouble-blind randomized parallel placebo-controlled clinical trial in two university physical-medicine centers
ModelMean age 52.4 years; symptomatic osteoarthritis
Sample160 adults with knee, hip or ankle OA (80 active, 80 placebo; 111 female, 49 male)
Intervention10 g/day proprietary type I/III hydrolyzed CollaSel PRO vs 10 g/day maltodextrin placebo
Duration8 weeks; visits at weeks 1, 4 and 8
EndpointsWOMAC knee/hip pain and function; AOFAS ankle-hindfoot scores; Tolerability

What the study showed, in plain terms

A 160-person trial of a defined 10-g/day type I/III hydrolyzed collagen product reported lower knee/hip WOMAC scores and better ankle AOFAS outcomes versus placebo by weeks 4 and 8.

Key findings

Significant between-group improvement in WOMAC and AOFAS by weeks 4 and 8 (reported p<0.001); short-term tolerability was favorable.

What this study can and cannot tell us

The trial tested proprietary CollaSel PRO rather than the DoNotAge formulation and included industry-linked authors associated with product supply. The eight-week outcomes were symptomatic and did not demonstrate structural cartilage regeneration or joint-replacement prevention. Multiple joint sites, repeated time points and site-specific analyses create multiplicity concerns, so interpretation should focus on prespecified between-group outcomes rather than within-group changes alone.
