Study snapshot

DesignMulticenter randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial
ModelAdults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease stages 3b-4
Sample99 randomized; 91 completed
InterventionIncremental broccoli sprout extract dosing, reported in the abstract as 50 to 150 µmol/day BSE, versus placebo.
Duration12 weeks of intervention plus 8 weeks without intervention
EndpointsFasting glucose; Insulin; HbA1c; Glycemic control; Follow-up after intervention

What the study showed, in plain terms

This 2026 multicenter trial tested whether broccoli sprout extract improves glucose control in older adults with both type 2 diabetes and moderate-to-severe chronic kidney disease.

Key findings

The trial found no statistically significant between-group improvements in fasting glucose, insulin or HbA1c after 12 weeks, and no significant benefit at the 21-week end-of-study follow-up in either intention-to-treat or per-protocol analyses.

What this study can and cannot tell us

The population was older and had CKD stages 3b-4, so the null result does not automatically negate findings in other type 2 diabetes populations. The abstract's dose wording is internally difficult to interpret, so dose conversions should not be inferred beyond the authors' reported BSE dosing.
