What the study showed, in plain terms

Sixty older adults were randomized to 250 mg/day NMN or placebo for 12 weeks. The prespecified primary stepping-test outcome did not differ between groups.

Secondary outcomes were more favorable: the NMN group had higher blood NAD+ and related metabolites, a shorter four-metre walking time and better scores on selected sleep-quality measures. No test-substance-related adverse effects were reported.

Key findings

  • The primary stepping-test outcome was not significantly different between NMN and placebo.
  • Blood NAD+ and related metabolites were significantly higher after NMN.
  • Four-metre walking time was shorter in the NMN group at 12 weeks.
  • Selected PSQI measures, including daytime dysfunction and global score, favored NMN.
  • No adverse effects related to the study substance were reported.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Positive walking and sleep findings were secondary outcomes while the primary stepping-test endpoint was null. The study was modest in size, lasted 12 weeks and was funded and largely authored by employees of Meiji Holdings.
