Study snapshot

DesignRandomized double-blind phase 2 placebo-controlled trial
ModelAdults with hypertension including drug-naive and treated subgroups
Sample68 randomized (34 drug-naive, 34 treated)
InterventionDaily 250 mL nitrate-rich beetroot juice versus nitrate-depleted placebo juice
DurationFour weeks after two-week run-in
EndpointsClinic blood pressure; 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure; Home blood pressure; Endothelial function; Arterial stiffness

What the study showed, in plain terms

In 68 adults with hypertension, nitrate-rich beetroot juice lowered measured blood pressure across clinic, 24-hour and home measurements compared with nitrate-depleted juice.

Key findings

24-hour ambulatory BP decreased by about 7.7/5.2 mmHg relative to control, with improved endothelial function during the four-week intervention.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Single-center phase 2, modest sample size and four-week follow-up. This is beetroot juice—not evidence of equivalent benefits from every nitric oxide supplement.
