Study snapshot

DesignRandomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel trial
ModelChinese adults with prediabetes
Sample70 randomized; 55 completed
InterventionFucoidan 1,000 mg/day versus placebo
Duration12 weeks
EndpointsGlycated serum protein; Glucose and lipid metabolism; TNF-alpha; IL-6; LPS; Gut microbiome composition

What the study showed, in plain terms

In adults with prediabetes, 1 g/day fucoidan for 12 weeks produced selected inflammatory, glucose-related and microbiome differences versus placebo. This is useful evidence that orally administered fucoidan can have measurable systemic effects in humans, but it does not establish a SIRT6 mechanism.

Key findings

Fucoidan was associated with a smaller increase in glycated serum protein.

TNF-alpha, IL-6 and LPS were reduced versus placebo.

Gut microbiome composition shifted in several taxa.

What this study can and cannot tell us

Only 55 of 70 randomized participants completed the trial.

Population had prediabetes rather than being a healthy-aging cohort.

SIRT6 activity was not measured and the fucoidan formulation differs from DoNotAge SIRT6Activator.

Seaweed-industry funding and material support were disclosed.
