What the study showed, in plain terms

This Aging Cell study tested AKG against age-related and surgery-induced temporomandibular-joint degeneration.

AKG improved cartilage measures in older mice and in a rat surgical osteoarthritis model and reduced senescence/inflammatory signaling in chondrocytes.

It expands musculoskeletal-aging evidence but does not establish that oral Ca-AKG treats osteoarthritis in people.

Key findings

  • AKG improved condylar-cartilage health in middle-aged and aged mice.
  • Pathology was reduced in a rat partial-discectomy osteoarthritis model.
  • IKK/NF-κB suppression accompanied lower senescence and catabolic markers.

What this study can and cannot tell us

  • Rodent disease models and cell experiments only.
  • TMJ osteoarthritis is a specialized joint model, not direct human osteoporosis evidence.
  • No commercial Ca-AKG formulation or human clinical endpoint was tested.
