Study snapshot

DesignRandomized placebo-controlled parallel trial in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis with effusion-synovitis.
ModelAdults aged 40-80 years with symptomatic radiographic knee osteoarthritis and ultrasound-defined effusion-synovitis.
SamplePlanned enrollment: 60 participants, 20 per arm.
InterventionArm 1: quercetin 1,250 mg/day plus fisetin 1,000 mg/day for three consecutive days every three weeks. Arm 2: the same quercetin-fisetin pulse followed by glycyrrhizin 100 mg/day for one week every three weeks. Comparator: placebo.
DurationApproximately 12-15 weeks depending on registry description.
EndpointsKnee pain; MRI effusion-synovitis volume; WOMAC pain/function/stiffness; OARSI-OMERACT response; Cartilage T2 mapping; Quality of life

What the study showed, in plain terms

This Assiut University trial was designed to test high-dose fisetin only in combination with quercetin, with a second active arm also adding glycyrrhizin, in people with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.

The study is suspended and no results are posted. Even if it resumes, it cannot determine the effect of fisetin alone because there is no fisetin-only arm.

Key findings

  • Planned enrollment is 60 participants.
  • Fisetin dose is 1,000 mg/day for three consecutive days every three weeks, always combined with quercetin.
  • The trial is currently suspended and has no posted results.

What this study can and cannot tell us

  • No outcome data available.
  • No fisetin-only arm, so attribution to fisetin is impossible.
  • High-dose combination regimen may have interaction and tolerability issues not generalizable to routine supplementation.
